About Us

FOCUS North America exists for one reason: to make Christ's love visible through unified Orthodox service. For over 30 years, we've been meeting our neighbors in their greatest moments of need — with food, shelter, dignity, and lasting relationships. This is who we are. This is what we do.

How it started

It began with a simple conviction: that the Orthodox Christian faith, lived fully, demands a response to poverty and suffering.

The Standing Conference of Orthodox Bishops of America (predecessor to the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America) develops a variety of pan-Orthodox ministries to address needs like international humanitarian relief, missionary work, and campus ministries. However, for decades there was no pan-Orthodox ministry to unite Orthodox Christians in domestic service work.

In the early 2000s, Orthodox lay leaders such as Charles Ajalat, Brian Gerich, and William Hoeft, Sr. recognized the need for such a ministry and began taking steps to it. This led to the creation of FOCUS North America in 2009.

Incorporated in California in March 2009, FOCUS has since grown to a national movement mobilizing Orthodox Christians into service. Affiliated with the Assembly of Bishops, FOCUS is a pan-Orthodox ministry uniting the faithful so the Church may be known for love in action–where serving the poor reveals the living presence of Christ to the world.

2009

The Start

FOCUS was established in 2009 thanks to the visionary efforts of founders Charles Ajalat, Brian Gerich, and William Hoeft, Sr.

2009

First Center

Fr. Alexei Altshul established a mission parish, St Mary of Egypt Serbian Orthodox Church, at the corner of 31st Street and Troost Avenue in Kansas City. This ministry evolved into Reconciliation Services, a still thriving ministry that briefly affiliated with FOCUS to help the new organization establish itself.

2010

New Centers

FOCUS began new Centers in Orange County, CA and Minneapolis, MN which continue to serve the community to this day.

2011

Expansion

FOCUS began a new Center in Saint Louis, MO which continues to serve the community to this day.

2012

Cleveland

FOCUS received Saint Herman’s House of Hospitality, a longstanding homeless shelter. Since beginning to operate as FOCUS Cleveland, the ministry has added both a transitional house and a low-income housing program in a third property.

2015

More Growth

FOCUS began a new Center in Detroit, MI which continues to serve the community to this day.

2023

Center Growth

FOCUS developed new Centers in Cincinnati, OH and Houston, TX. This was the first new Center development in several years and marked the beginning of a new chapter of growth. It brought the total number of FOCUS Centers to 7.

2024

Acceleration

FOCUS established three new Centers in Philadelphia, PA; Phoenix, AZ; and Los Angeles, CA. FOCUS also received Loaves & Fishes, a longstanding ministry which has begun to operate as FOCUS Atlanta. This brought the total number of FOCUS Centers to 11.

2025

13 Centers

FOCUS established two new Centers in Bridgeport, CT and San Francisco, CA, bringing the total number of FOCUS Centers to 13.

FAQs

What is FOCUS?

The Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve (FOCUS North America) is the domestic service arm of the Church, bringing together Orthodox faithful across the country to live out Christ’s call to serve others.

What does "FOCUS" stand for?

FOCUS is the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve. As the domestic service arm of the Orthodox Church, FOCUS unites Orthodox Christians to reveal Christ’s love through service that restores dignity, transforms lives, and builds community. Yet each letter of “FOCUS” also represents the core services we provide: Food, Occupation, Clothing, Understanding, and Shelter. Our name is both who we are and what we do.

What is a FOCUS Center?

FOCUS currently operates 13 local hubs where Orthodox faithful unite to serve their neighbors.  FOCUS Center ministries include:

  • Distributing food, clothing & essential supplies
  • Supporting mothers, children & families
  • Offering job readiness, hygiene & community resources
  • Serving all people without discrimination

Each Center is shaped by its city’s needs — but united in one mission: to reveal Christ’s love through service that restores dignity, transforms lives, and builds community.

What is the mission of FOCUS?

FOCUS unites Orthodox Christians to reveal Christ’s love through service that restores dignity, transforms lives, and builds community.

How is FOCUS organized?

FOCUS operates as a single 501(c)(3) organization. Each FOCUS Center is an operating division of this single, national organization. This creates economies of scale that allow programs to operate as efficiently and impactful as possible with the support of a National Office that supports, guides, and sustains local efforts.

How does my support help those in need?

FOCUS Centers operate with a baseline 92% efficiency. Operating as a single entity allows FOCUS to consolidate and scale administrative costs to maximize the resources available for feeding, clothing, housing, and serving our neighbors in need. The National Office both handles background administrative and operational items (financial tracking, annual audit, creation of policies and procedures, etc) and establishes new FOCUS Centers which seamlessly plug into these systems and create new, impactful programs in communities across the country.

How does FOCUS understand poverty?

FOCUS sees poverty as fundamentally about disconnection. At its most basic level, poverty is a disconnection from the material goods people need (I’m hungry because I lack food, for example). Looked at more deeply, poverty is a disconnection between people, some of whom possess material goods that others need (I’m hungry because someone else has food and won’t share it with me). At its deepest level, poverty is a disconnection between God and man: were people to truly live as God’s children, we would see each other as brothers and sisters and live accordingly.

How can I get involved?

There are three ways to get involved:

  • Pray — Remember the ministry of FOCUS, both those we serve and serve with, in your daily prayers.
  • Give — Become a monthly donor and support either a local FOCUS Center or the National Office, which supports all existing Centers, develops new Centers, and offers a variety of National Programs.
  • Serve — Volunteer at a FOCUS Center near you or engage in one of our National Programs.
What if there's no FOCUS Center in my city?

FOCUS started 2023 with just 5 local FOCUS Centers in operation and currently runs 13 across the country, with an additional 4 in development this year. Click here to learn more about the New Center Development Process and how you can help bring this ministry to your community.
